SACSCOC reaffirmed FIU's accreditation on December 6, 2010. The University maintains the standards specified by SACSCOC "Principles of Accreditation" and notifies SACSCOC of any substantive changes.
Every ten years a university's regional accreditation must be reaffirmed. FIU was first accredited in 1974, and reaffirmed in 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010. The next reaffirmation is 2020.

Academic Affairs has a major goal to pursue accreditation for all the degree programs for which there are accrediting agencies. This is in pursuit of the University goal to maintain the quality of all educational programs and the University's philosophy of "Quality Management."
Professional degree programs at FIU are accredited or approved by the appropriate specialized accreditation agency, or pursuing full accreditation or approval. Each of these accrediting bodies have their own specific criteria, review process, and time frame.
